Fr Oliver Reilly, parish priest in Ballyconnell, Co Cavan, died last week. Tributes describe him as a courageous man who spoke out on local issues.

In 2019, Fr Reilly gave a homily at Mass in Ballyconnell condemning the attack on Fermanagh businessman Kevin Lunney. He referred to the perpetrators as savage thugs.

A journalist spoke to Fr Reilly after the homily and told him to watch himself. The remark meant to advise caution and care for his wellbeing.

The exchange led to a headline stating a Cavan priest was told to watch himself after condemning the Lunney attack.

The journalist later clarified to Fr Reilly that no harm was intended with the comment.
