SDLP Leader Calls for Economic Strategy as Executive Faces Criticism
SDLP Leader Claire Hanna MP stated that the Northern Ireland Executive operates without a clear plan to advance the local economy. Her comments came after a report from the Northern Ireland Affairs Committee on the region's economic growth.
The committee found that the Northern Ireland economy has grown since the Covid-19 pandemic. It identified a significant opportunity exists. The Executive has not put in place the required planning or infrastructure to take advantage of these opportunities.
Hanna, MP for South Belfast and Mid Down, pointed to failures by the Executive and UK Government in planning. She said small and medium enterprises cannot fully benefit from dual market access due to insufficient support. Deficits persist in infrastructure, skills, and planning. Economic growth remains imbalanced outside Belfast.
The report warned of risks from cuts to Local Growth Fund support. Hanna argued these cuts could lead to loss of vital services and thousands of jobs. She said government departments work in isolation based on individual ministers' political priorities.
Hanna noted the absence of a multi-year budget, a clear investment strategy, and a plan to manage economic challenges. The SDLP released a detailed economic plan earlier this month. The plan calls for an all-island approach and cooperation with Dublin and London.
