UFU Hosts Farm Family Day to Discuss Agricultural Resilience Policies
The Ulster Farmers' Union organised NI Farm Family Day, sponsored by Aoife Finnegan MLA and co-sponsored by Robbie Butler MLA. The event provided opportunities for farm families, MLAs and others to discuss policies supporting resilient farm businesses.
UFU President William Irvine addressed attendees. He stated that farm families in Northern Ireland produce high-quality food, maintain the countryside and sustain rural communities despite rising costs, market pressures and regulatory demands.
Irvine noted that resilience involves persisting through fluctuating prices, adverse weather, policy shifts and new challenges. He said resilience requires practical policies, clear government direction and support.
Policy officers led sessions on arable and horticulture, livestock, rural affairs, environment, rural enterprise and animal health. Participants identified challenges to farm resilience and considered actions for policymakers.
Irvine highlighted the central role of farm families in the industry. He described farming as a way of life that bolsters rural communities, food security and the economy. He called for policies that build confidence in the sector's future for the next generation.
The UFU thanked attendees, including farm families, MLAs and ABP Angus Youth Challenge participants, for their contributions to the discussions.
