Lisburn Chef Returns to College as Part-Time Lecturer After Culinary Degree
Matthew McGivern, 27, from Lisburn, works as sous chef at DoubleTree by Hilton on Kingfisher Country Estate. He also serves as part-time lecturer in professional cookery at South Eastern Regional College's Lisburn Campus.
McGivern completed a Foundation Degree in Culinary Arts through the Higher Level Apprenticeship pathway at South Eastern Regional College in 2025, earning distinction. The degree came from the Open University. He now pursues a BSc Honours in Culinary Arts Management at Ulster University in Belfast.
After GCSEs and AS Levels at Lisnagarvey High School, McGivern enrolled at age 17 in Level 2 Culinary Skills at the college. He advanced to Level 3 Professional Cookery and Level 3 Professional Cookery in Patisserie and Confectionery.
In his sous chef role, McGivern supervises food preparation and service, manages stock levels, ensures hygiene and safety standards, and trains junior chefs.
McGivern took part in college competitions and international placements in Spain and South Africa. He credits the college's hands-on environment for building his technical and creative skills.
