The Alliance Party submitted its response to the Independent Remuneration Board's consultation on MLA salaries. The party backed the panel's independence and opposed MLAs setting their own pay.

Alliance stressed that salary changes must match public finances and align with public sector worker increases. The submission noted public frustration with proposed raises amid slow Stormont progress and frequent Executive instability over the past decade.

The party called the panel's suggested penalties for non-operational Assembly periods inadequate. It proposed complete salary stoppage for MLAs from parties preventing Assembly function, similar to strike action deductions for other workers.

Alliance argued such penalties reveal flaws in political institutions. The party urged UK and Irish governments to reform systems so no single party can block government operations.
