Road Policing Team Enforces Trailer Licensing Rules in Derry Area
Maydown Road Policing Interceptors stopped a driver towing a trailer lacking operational lights. The driver held only category B licence and had not completed a trailer test.
The vehicle was limited to trailers up to 750kg maximum authorised mass. Police issued fixed penalties for the offences. Driving outside licence conditions can invalidate insurance and result in court.
Drivers who passed tests after 1 January 1997 hold category B with provisional entitlement for category BE on their Northern Ireland licence. Towing over 750kg requires L plates and supervision by a qualified driver aged 21 or over with at least three years holding category BE.
A category B vehicle up to 3500kg maximum authorised mass can tow a trailer if the combined mass stays under 4250kg. Maximum authorised mass includes passengers, fuel, and cargo. Drivers must use plated weights from the vehicle or trailer.
For heavier trailers over 750kg, the combined mass with the vehicle must not exceed 3500kg without BE entitlement.
