The Department of Education in Northern Ireland has launched a Call for Evidence on the Review of the Religious Education (RE) Core Syllabus. An online survey is available to gather views from the public to inform a Drafting Group comprising experts, teachers, and school leaders.

The review follows a Supreme Court judgment that found the current RE Core Syllabus, which is nearly 20 years old, does not present information in an objective, critical, and pluralistic manner. The process aligns with broader reforms to the Northern Ireland Curriculum.

Education Minister Paul Givan stated that the Call for Evidence provides an opportunity to ensure the new syllabus reflects learners' needs and encouraged wide participation.

Professor Noel Purdy, Chair of the Drafting Group, noted that contributions from parents, carers, children, young people, teachers, school leaders, faith and non-religious representatives, and others will provide valuable insights.

The survey closes on 20 March 2026 and is accessible at https://consultations.nidirect.gov.uk/de/re-review-call-for-evidence/.
