Edgar Graham Debate held at Stormont for young people
The Edgar Graham Debate was held last week in the Senate Chamber at Parliament Buildings, Stormont. The event, organised by the Ulster Women’s Unionist Council, saw participation from 20 schools.
The debate is named after Edgar Graham, a former Ulster Unionist politician and academic who was killed by the IRA in 1983. It aims to encourage young people to engage in democratic discussion and develop public speaking skills.
Jon Burrows MLA, leader of the Ulster Unionist Party, said the debate is one of the most inspiring events in the civic calendar. He noted that the event encourages the next generation of leaders to make their voices heard.
Lady Daphne Trimble, honorary president of the Ulster Unionist Party, said the standard of debate was exceptionally high and that the future of Northern Ireland is in capable hands.
First place went to Jessica Ikeaba of Wellington College Belfast. Sarah Martin of Sperrin Integrated College took second place, and Madison Weir of the Royal School Dungannon was third.
