Dungiven man given suspended sentence for 1976 explosives and firearms offences
A 73-year-old man from Dungiven has been sentenced for offences dating back to 1976.
Joseph Gerard Kelly was given a six-year prison sentence, suspended for five years, at a court hearing on Thursday. He had pleaded guilty to possessing two electronic detonators and two pressure mats with intent to endanger life on 16 February 1976. He also admitted possessing firearms and ammunition with intent to endanger life or cause serious injury to property, contrary to section 14 of the Firearms Act (Northern Ireland) 1969. The firearms were identified as two Walther pistols and a Browning pistol.
Detective Superintendent Chris Millar of the Legacy Investigation Branch acknowledged the sentencing. He stated that Kelly had pleaded guilty to the offences, which were committed on 16 February 1976.
Millar said that while legacy investigations present many challenges, the conviction shows the criminal justice system can deliver a measure of justice regardless of how long ago a crime took place.
Kelly's address was given as Dungiven. No further details about the investigation or court proceedings were provided.
