PSNI moves to interview phase in Garvaghy Road criminal investigation
Police have moved to the next phase of their large-scale investigation into the Drumcree/Garvaghy Road dispute in Portadown, with individuals to receive letters regarding interview processes.
Assistant Chief Constable Davy Beck confirmed the investigation has been ongoing for weeks, led by an experienced senior investigating officer. The team has been reviewing evidence gathered during the policing operation, compiling material into evidential packages for identified persons reasonably suspected of committing offences.
This work will now proceed to the interview stage, with letters to be issued. Beck said he is satisfied this step does not impact the ongoing judicial review brought by Garvaghy Road residents challenging the Parades Commission decision allowing the march.
The dispute began when a protest, including some politicians, blocked Garvaghy Road to prevent a legally permitted Orange Order parade of 35 Orangemen from proceeding in silence at 8am. Sinn Féin described the parade as an act of intimidation; unionist politicians have called for police to take action against first minister Michelle O'Neill and other Sinn Féin members who took part.
Sinn Féin said it was aware of the police statement and would not comment further due to the ongoing investigation. The Police Service of Northern Ireland has declined further comment as the investigation is live.
