Antrim Area Hospital has received UK-wide recognition for the training it provides to doctors specialising in obstetrics and gynaecology after positive feedback from resident doctors.

The hospital's Obstetrics and Gynaecology team was highly commended in the Overall and Obstetrics category for medium-sized hospitals in the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists' 2026 Trainee Evaluation Form results.

The college said the results showed marked improvements in the hospital's training environment, recognising the department's sustained work to give trainees a positive and supportive experience.

The annual survey asks doctors in training across the UK about supervision, learning opportunities, workplace culture, leadership, professional development and their overall training experience.

Dr Laura McMorran, a consultant in obstetrics and gynaecology and the RCOG tutor for 2026, described the recognition as a significant achievement that reflects the dedication and teamwork of everyone involved in supporting education and training within the unit.

She added that the award, which compares the unit against 169 other units in the UK, is a source of pride and that the team is looking forward to building on the progress already made.

Lynne McCartney, interim Director of Surgery, Women's Health and Diagnostic Services at the Northern Trust, said the recognition reflected the team's commitment to education and training. She said excellent training is fundamental to building a skilled, confident workforce and, ultimately, to delivering the very best care for patients.

The hospital serves the Northern Trust area, which includes Antrim, Ballymena, Carrickfergus, Larne, and Newtownabbey.
