A 47-year-old man has been charged with abandoning an animal and causing unnecessary suffering after two dogs were found dead at a property in Sloanhill Court, Lurgan.

The man was arrested on Tuesday, August 18, the day after the dogs were discovered. He is due to appear before Craigavon Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, September 9.

The incident was raised at a meeting of Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council. Lord Mayor Mary O’Dowd told members that the PSNI had asked the public not to speculate or comment on the case while inquiries continue.

DUP Alderman Stephen Moutray said his thoughts were with neighbours, council staff, the PSNI and Arbour Housing. He stated that the only person at fault was the individual who left two dogs caged to die, and he expressed hope that the legal process would result in a conviction.

DUP Councillor Peter Haire said he was deeply upset by what happened. He said the circumstances should lead to a full examination of the agencies involved and that any lessons must be acted upon. He added that while proceedings are ongoing, the justice system must be allowed to take its course.

UUP Councillor Kyle Savage spoke of a sense of shock in the community. He said that in recent weeks there had been a number of horrific acts of animal cruelty across Northern Ireland, and that there was no place for such behaviour in society. He indicated he hoped the full rigours of the law would be applied to the person responsible.

The council said it would not be appropriate to comment on the specific circumstances while police investigations are ongoing.
