DUP MP for Strangford Jim Shannon has been charged with common assault of a woman. The alleged offence is dated 1 October 2023. The case was first listed at Newtownards Magistrates' Court on Monday.

Shannon, 71, with an address at DUP offices on Frances Street in Newtownards, did not attend the hearing. Defence counsel Conan Rea told the court his client had lodged a defence statement.

The Public Prosecution Service will apply to amend dates on paperwork it lodged. Rea said the defence will object to that application. He said the defence had lodged a skeleton argument detailing its objections.

Deputy District Judge Trevor Browne adjourned the case to 1 September after prosecuting counsel was set to reply to the submissions.

DUP leader Gavin Robinson told reporters in Belfast the party became aware of the issue over two years ago. He said internal party proceedings were started but suspended once the party learned the courts were involved. Robinson said the matter would be determined by the courts and he would not prejudge it or add further detail.

Shannon was first elected to Ards Borough Council in 1985 and served as mayor in 1991 and 1992. He was elected to the Northern Ireland Assembly in 1998 and re-elected in 2003 and 2007. He has served as MP for Strangford since 2010.
