Health Minister Mike Nesbitt has visited Lagan Valley Hospital to thank members of the Ex-Patients Guild as the volunteer group marks its 60th anniversary. Since 1973, the Guild has raised more than £322,000, funding equipment that improves patient care across the hospital.

The Guild’s hospital shop opened in 1966, beginning with volunteers taking trolleys of goods to wards. It later became a permanent fixture, selling refreshments and everyday essentials, while volunteers also help visitors find their way around the site.

Brenda Waring, who has volunteered for 28 years, described how the role gave her purpose after a personal bereavement. She noted the Guild has adapted over time, introducing card payments to boost fundraising, and that all proceeds go directly to patient equipment.

Roberta England, another long-serving volunteer, highlighted the shop’s role in supporting anxious patients and visitors. She recalled being a patient herself before discovering the service and emphasised the satisfaction of directing people and raising funds for hospital equipment.

Jonathan Patton, Chairman of the South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust, called the volunteers’ contribution phenomenal, noting every penny raised is reinvested into patient care. Sonya Duffy, the Trust’s Volunteering Manager, said the 60-year milestone reflects decades of dedication and hopes it will inspire others to join.

The Ex-Patients Guild is welcoming new volunteers to continue its work.
