HM Revenue and Customs is set to recover Winter Fuel Payments for winter 2025 from around two million people, including those in Northern Ireland. The process, which will involve automatic adjustments to PAYE tax codes from April 2026, has prompted police in Fermanagh to warn residents about scam attempts.

The PSNI said criminals are using fake phone calls, text messages, emails, and online advertisements to steal money and personal information. Common frauds include phishing emails, identity theft, investment scams, ticket fraud, and WhatsApp impersonation where fraudsters pretend to be a family member needing urgent financial help.

HMRC has received more than 25,000 scam referrals linked to Winter Fuel Payments in the past year. The department stressed it will never contact people by text or email to request repayment or bank details. There is no need for anyone to contact HMRC about the recovery, as it will be handled automatically through tax codes.

Anyone who believes they have been targeted should report the matter to police and their bank immediately.
