Shoppers at the Asda store in Strabane have criticised new parking restrictions that impose £60 fines for returning to the site after leaving.

The rules, managed by Parkingeye, were introduced in April and limit free parking to three hours. They also bar returns within two hours and prohibit parking when the store is closed, including for use of the 24-hour ATM.

Jim Devlin said he received a £60 charge after spending 40 minutes in the store and returning ten minutes later to collect another item. He challenged the fine and was told it would be withdrawn.

Devlin said the policy on returns is unreasonable and that many customers may not notice the signage.

Stephen Birkett reported that a friend received a similar fine and contacted the company head office. The fine was later cancelled.

An Asda spokesperson said the measures were introduced to keep spaces available for customers. The company stated that staff can assist customers who need extra time.

The Strabane store draws thousands of shoppers weekly, including from across the border.
