Bessbrook Man Remanded on Domestic Assault Charges After Bail Refusal
Suleyman Erdogan, 24, of Mourne View Terrace in Bessbrook, Co Armagh, appeared at Belfast High Court where bail was refused. He faces charges including inflicting grievous bodily harm, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, domestic abuse, multiple counts of common assault, possessing Class B and C drugs, and criminal damage.
Crown counsel Sarah Minford outlined allegations of assaults starting two years ago after the couple moved in together. Police received a report last month when the woman arrived at a station in distress. She claimed Erdogan struck her face with a nitrous oxide cylinder, stood on her toe until the nail ripped off on both big toes, scraped her face with his nails, and chased her with a kettle of boiling water.
Incidents included slaps at a Belfast hotel on Valentine's Day while Erdogan consumed alcohol and gas. On March 17, he allegedly kicked her head and pulled her by the hair. The woman left Northern Ireland with her family due to fear.
Officers arrested Erdogan at his home and found four containers of nitrous oxide plus 26 empty ones nearby. Defence counsel noted his two years in Northern Ireland without prior offences and issues with substance misuse and alcohol.
Judge Neil Rafferty KC denied bail citing risks of re-offending and contacting the complainant. Erdogan is also wanted in the Republic of Ireland on three bench warrants. He plans to contest the charges.
