O'Toole Criticises Stormont Executive Over Energy Cost Support Delay
SDLP Leader of the Opposition Matthew O’Toole MLA criticised the Northern Ireland Executive for not addressing rising household energy and fuel costs. He represents South Belfast.
O'Toole stated the Executive offered no meaningful leadership to households facing increased costs. He said ministers relied on requests to the UK Government without plans to distribute available funds.
The Executive has £17 million allocated for families with heating oil costs. O'Toole said ministers have not specified how or when this money will be disbursed.
He noted Northern Ireland residents depend heavily on vehicle fuel and home heating oil. O'Toole criticised ministers for limited responses beyond letters to London.
O'Toole pointed out ministers and MLAs received pay rises. He said this contrasts with the lack of progress on support packages.
Stormont returns next week. O'Toole anticipates disputes between main parties that have failed to provide leadership during the crisis.
