DUP MLA Flags Sharp Rise in Justice Department Translation Spending
North Down DUP MLA Stephen Dunne has questioned the Department of Justice's spending on translation and interpretation services. Figures from Justice Minister Naomi Long show costs rose from £138,000 in 2020-21 to £256,000 in 2024-25.
Dunne noted the total increase exceeds 85% over five years. The department spent more than £1 million on these services during that period.
He acknowledged the need for such services to ensure access to justice. Dunne called for scrutiny to confirm the spending provides value for money.
Dunne pointed to pressures on public finances. He seeks details on factors behind the cost increases and potential efficiency improvements.
The Department of Justice often cites limited budgets, Dunne observed.
