Nine Civil Engineering Apprentices at South West College Win ICE Scholarships
Nine higher level apprentices studying civil engineering at South West College's Omagh campus secured scholarships from the Institution of Civil Engineers. Each award totals £1,000 through the Queen’s Jubilee Scholarship Trust. The students qualified after evaluation of academic records, work experience and career goals, followed by interviews with qualified engineers.
The recipients include Katie Harper, Bonnie Harper, Mollie Darcy, Aine Cunningham, Niamh Colton, Seamus Cleary, Odhran Brolly, Sean Morris and Ben McAvoy. This marks the highest number of winners from the college in a single year. Mollie Darcy earned additional recognition as one of the top two candidates across UK regions with the Francis Connolly QUEST Technician Scholarship.
Dr. Danielle McKelvey, Curriculum Manager for Sustainability, Construction and Transport at the college, stated the awards reflect the apprentices' abilities and future promise. She noted the selection process underscores their resolve and skills, along with college teaching quality and industry partner support.
The scholarship recipients must now help the Institution of Civil Engineers promote the profession at career events and school visits in Northern Ireland. The goal includes aiding their path to higher education and qualification as ICE Technician Members.
