A Year 13 pupil from St Michael's College in Enniskillen has secured the principal Eb tuba position in the National Youth Brass Band of Northern Ireland. Connell Margetts passed an audition for the new ensemble and will direct the tuba section during rehearsals.

The band gathered for its initial session on February 21 at Queen's University Belfast. Forty-five musicians aged 13 to 23 rehearsed new pieces and began skill development under guidance.

Rehearsals continue over three Saturdays with tutors and Musical Director Les Neish. Brass Bands of Northern Ireland organises the group.

The ensemble performs its first concert on March 21 at Strule Arts Centre. Margetts's brass teacher Mr Crooks praised the pupil's readiness to take on the role.
